On October 18, a joint meeting of the International Cooperation Section of the Council for the Arctic and Antarctic of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Department of International Law was held at the MGIMO University

Dr. Ivan V. BUNIK, PhD, adjunct professor of School of Government and International Affairs MGIMO University, attorney-at-law at Moscow Law Firm “Timofeev, Vahrenwald and Partners”, gave a speech on the Canadian legislative experience in regulating navigation in the Northwest Passage. He touched upon the legal stances of Canada and US with regards to the status of the said sea route and presented recommendations for Russia's taking into account the experience of Canada, Denmark and Norway to establish only straight baselines along the Arctic coast.

Representatives of the Presidential Executive Office, Federal Assembly, and federal executive bodies took part in the section.

During the meeting the participants developed a number of proposals for the Council for the Arctic and Antarctic of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
